Amber Quail

The introduction of alcoholic beverages to Indigenous civilizations by European settlers has done incalculable damage for generations. Further, this has led to harmful stereotypes perpetuated by the dominant culture.

This series of work aims to disrupt the false and destructivenarrative of the “drunken Indian” through an exploration of visual brand recognition. The repurposing of a Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) bag as the canvas for traditional Woodland images symbolizes the erasure of harmful systemic stereotypes. The work is an invitation to engage in a more honest story that amplifies the resilience, brilliance and elegance of First Peoples, our cultures, traditions, and knowledge.
